I am interested in the effects of a variable environment on the variation in individual genomes and gene expression in Fundulus heteroclitus. Physiological and environmental canalization of gene expression may act to hide the genotypic variation of individuals in natural environments. My work investigates this hypothesis by quantifying the variation in SNPs and mRNA expression in the field and under controlled conditions. This research will allow me to identify potentially relevant genes, and further investigate how environmental, SNP, and mRNA variation are related in natural populations.
